The dental pulp can become inflamed or infected after deep decay, a crack, a large restoration or trauma. Root canal treatment removes the damaged tissue, disinfects the internal space and seals the tooth to reduce the risk of reinfection.

The tooth is carefully isolated and made comfortable. The canals are then cleaned, shaped and disinfected before being sealed. Treatment may take more than one visit depending on the tooth and the extent of infection.
Root-treated teeth can be more vulnerable to fracture. Depending on how much tooth remains, your dentist may recommend a crown or onlay to protect it. Every tooth is assessed individually before treatment begins.
Individual advice matters. Suitability, alternatives, risks and likely outcomes can only be confirmed after an examination.
